Comfortably aboard their ship, prepped for the return trip in the windowless central chamber, Hozark and his friends settled in for the flight from the secret facility.

It was an unusual trip, and not exactly what was planned. What had been intended to be a rather sobering lesson in the flip side of the Ghalian life, had turned into a quite positive adventure for the unexpecting visitors.

Yes, they had seen the downside of the assassin’s lifestyle. Disfigurement and worse were quite likely in the pursuit of a target. But so too was glory, though of a quiet and unassuming variety. But now, with Aargun’s strange new ability, and his silent, brotherly connection with Henni, things were a bit different, and Hozark wondered what exactly that might mean moving forward.

As for Happizano, the boy was merrily playing with the small knife he had been gifted. It seemed the days of his toys might have finally ended. Or, at least, they might have been replaced with playthings of a new variety.

“The blade fits your hand well,” Hozark said. “And I saw that you had gained in proficiency in that short time.”

“Yeah, it’s a lot of fun,” the boy replied.

“We shall continue your practice until you are able to visit Aargun next. I think you may have the makings of a fine blademaster in you yet, and I am quite interested to see what else you might show skill at.”

“You’ll teach me more?”

“Of course,” Hozark replied. “As will Demelza, naturally. Both you and Henni have shown quite a great deal of potential in the short time she has been working with you, and I, for one, am looking forward to seeing where your training takes you.”

The boy was beaming for the entire flight back to Corann’s, and Henni, likewise, was in fine spirits, though hers seemed to also stem from having connected with Aargun as she had.

It was an utterly non-romantic thing she felt between them, but a unique and powerful one regardless. And with it, it seemed her inner powers had come alive, at least a little bit.

All it took was that first spark to ignite the kindling. And for whatever reason, that wounded Ghalian had been tainted with just the right kind of strange magic from his torture and experimentation to trigger the reaction.

Laskar, on the other hand, just seemed a bit mopey. He found the knife training boring, and was unimpressed by the stories of how Aargun came to be the way he was.

The Ghalian’s unusual ability to cast without words, however, had definitely caught his attention. But with no one able to explain to him how it worked, Laskar found himself both enthralled yet stymied, all at the same time.

It was understandable, Hozark thought, why he was frustrated. But aside from that little hiccup, the two Ghalian masters agreed, it had been a very productive trip.

“Corann! Look what I got!” Hap shouted out as he ran to the sweet woman as soon as they’d landed.

“Oh, that’s a nice knife you’ve got there,” she said, clocking Aargun’s gift.
